UPDATE! August 4, 2008 - From Andy Bell:

WORLD SERIES OF BACKGAMMON 07/08:

DENMARK, THE PARTOUCHEGAMMON NORDIC OPEN

A slight change to the published broadcast schedule in the UK which begins tonight; WSOB Nordic Open 2008, the second stop of this year's tour, actually airs tonight in the UK at 9pm GMT, not 10pm as previously advertised!

Next week's show airs at 7.15pm GMT in the UK, not 8.15pm GMT and the following weeks, 9pm GMT not 10pm.

Please check TV listings on www.Eurosport.com for information on repeats and broadcasts around Europe.

Not to be missed, this evenings show, introduced by Jessie Cantrell with Gus Hansen and John Clark, features quarter-final action between German rivals, the studious Jan Jacobowitz and the irrepressible Gotz Hildsberg (Gotz, also PartoucheGammon Tour 2007 winner), also featuring coverage of the early rounds of this year's record breaking Nordic Open which attracted 155 players into the Championship Event plus more q-f action between the notorious Tassilo Rzymann and the enigmatic poker pro and respected bg player, Claus Cato.

Don't miss next weeks show with Gus and Sander playing with $10,000 of their own cash in 5 point match, with only 3 minutes on the clock!

UPDATE! July 24, 2008 - From Andy Bell: "I have received some some adjustments today from Eurosport to the scheduling of the four Nordic Open shows which means UK will not air until August 4th - new schedule below:

UNITED KINGDOM TX ON EUROSPORT 2

Programme One – 4th Aug 10pm GMT (quarter finals and early rounds)
Programme Two – 14th Aug 8.15pm GMT (semi and Gus and Sander)
Programme Three – 18th Aug 10pm GMT (Semi)
Programme Four – 3rd September at 10pm GMT (Final)"

What about catching the WSOB shows on TV in North America?

Andy replied saying, “I can’t say too much about other channels at the moment before signature but can tell you ESPN in the USA has expressed interest in WSOB and we very much hope to announce broadcasts there in the near future and ESPN International are talking to several channels in Europe who have also expressed interest."

The WSOB now heads to Cannes to film the PartoucheGammon Riviera and Nations Cup 6 from July 15 to 21, 2008. This will be the final stop of Season 2 of the WSOB climaxing with the WSOB Championship €160,000 Shoot-Out Decider where 16 qualified players will compete in a one-day event on July 21 with the winner taking home a cool €100,000 of the €160,000.

Regarding Cannes, Will Cockerell of the WSOB will be writing daily reports on the Riviera Cup, Nations Cup and the WSOB Championship and will provide this content to GammonLife.

“Lots of players including many new names are announcing their intent to play in Cannes so we are very excited about the event, especially after the success of the Nordic Open,” Bell remarked, “the list is on WSOB site and we are excited to see many players from Turkey, Greece, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Around half of the names on the list of 80+ at the moment are unknown to WSOB or PartoucheGammon and there at least 50 other players we know to be attending so this is almost certain to be a record field for Cannes.”

Who are the 16 players that will compete in the WSOB finale?

Players qualified so far are; UK Masters Winner, John Hurst; Nordic Open Winner, Tassilo Rzymann; plus the winner of the Riviera Cup on July 20th.

As well, the top five finishers (excluding the previously mentioned winners) – the players in contention can be seen at this link – however these standings can change with the results of the Riviera Cup tournament.

The other eight players come from qualifiers. Play65.com held three €10.000 Super Satellite online qualifiers over the last few months and is sending the winners of those to Cannes. These three players are Athanasios Lagopatis of Germany, Andy Plater of the UK and Aron Korper of The Netherlands. A live super satellite qualifier was held in Europe live and was won by Oscar Carlsson of Sweden, to make it four qualifiers to date.

The other four qualifiers will be determined over the next week or so in live qualifiers being held in Monte Carlo and Cannes in 4, 8, 16 and 32-player draws.

As for Season III of the World Series of Backgammon, Bell told GammonLife that, “we are currently working on the format for Season III which we will announce sometime in the next eight weeks. In the meantime, I can say we are aiming to add one event to the WSOB tour, but I can’t say where! The UK Masters will be held in January of 2009 to launch WSOB Season III."
