Christidis Takes Fourth Monthly Event at Cafe Aias in Athens

Twenty-nine players from around Greece competed in the fourth monthly tournament of the Greek Backgammon Federation, which was won by Charis Christidis who moves from 5th to 2nd place in the national rankings.

The event was held this time at Cafe Aias in Athens on Saturday, February 9 as will our next monthly on March 9.

Christidis is now in second place on the National Ranking List of Greece chasing leader George Kleitsas, who maintained his amazing lead by making it to the semi-finals in the February event.

Kleitsas maintains a firm grip on first place with 91 points - he has won 15 out of 19 matches played so far. Meanwhile, Christidis is 19 points behind Kleitsas, with 72 points, and has won 11 out of 14 matches in the four monthly competitions. Dr. Christos Groutsos, winner of the first event is in third place (just two points behind Christidis) with 70 points and Groutsos has won 11 out of his 17 matches played.

Three more new players attended the February event making it 61 different players that have competed in the four tournaments. We are happy with this growth and ever thankful to GammonLife Editor Michael Strato who made a special trip to Athens last October and inspired us to create the Greek Backgammon Federation and a regular monthly event.

We are currently negotiating with sponsors and hope to provide some very special prizes to the top 10 players at the end of the year.

No matches were recorded at the fourth event. The final got started rather late, at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, and any match recorders still on the scene were just too tired to record.


Tournaments start at 3:30 p.m. and the entry fee is €100. There is no registration fee. Format is 11-point match in main with 13-point matches in the semi-finals and a 15-pointer in the final. Consolation matches are 9 points with 11 points in the consolation semis and a 13-point final.
